Kennel Training Your Puppy
If you have brought home a puppy then one of the first things you want to teach it with regards to proper puppy behavior is to house train them. This is, teach them how to wait to go outside to relieve themselves. You can spend your days and nights following them around constantly hoping to catch them right before they are in the act of going and running them outside, but there is a much easier way to go about it. Purchase the right dog kennel –
The first thing you're going to want to do is to purchase the right kennel. You need a kennel that is large enough that your puppy can stand completely without bumping its head on the top of the kennel. It also needs to be large enough for them to be able to turn around completely without hitting into the sides of the kennel.
You can get a water bottle that connects to the side of the kennel, so you don't have to worry about the puppy spilling the water. You should feed them outside of the kennel and not free feed them, so you won't have to worry about fitting a food bowl in there. Put a blanket in the kennel so they have a comfortable bed and give the pup some chew toys.
Get the right routine going – When it comes to kennel training your puppy, you want to make sure you are doing everything in a way that will help them understand what you are asking of them as quickly and stress free as possible. You want to keep your puppy in the kennel anytime you can't be right there with them.
When you take the puppy out of the kennel for any reason, you want to take them directly outside until they go to the bathroom. When they do, you want to give them a lot of praise. After, you can feed them and play with them. When you can't watch them anymore, you want to take them out again and repeat the outside process. Then, put them back in the kennel.
Don't leave them in the kennel for too long since puppies have small bladders. Always take them out right away first thing in the morning and right before you go to bed. You may want to set your alarm to take them out once during the night, or sleep where you can hear them whining. Of course, you can expect them to do a lot of whining their first few days in the kennel. After a few weeks, you can try letting them run around a bit more on their own, but still watch them closely. Coax them to follow you outside instead of carrying them, so they start to learn to go to the door when they need out.
